Todmorden
West Yorkshire
Todmorden lies at the head of Calder Valley and sits on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border at the head of three very steep valleys. The town centre is crowded along the bottom alongside roads, rail and canal. From the valley tops there are breathtaking views across the moors to the 120ft high Stoodley Pike monument and down on to the town. The people here have always been independent from the yeoman farmers and cotton mill owners such as John Fielden MP who helped shape the town and championed workers rights across the country, to the town’s two Nobel Prize winners for physics and chemistry in the 20th century.
