Your Personal Town Guide
West Yorkshire
Marsden lies at the head of the Colne Valley and surrounded by steep moorland. It is here that packhorse trails, road, canal and rail gather together to cross the Pennines to Ashton under Lyne. The railway and Huddersfield narrow canal pass through tunnels, the latter took 17 years to build (opened 1811) and is the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK – for a barge to travel through men had to lie on their backs and use their legs to propel the barges the 3.25 mile length – taking up to four hours. The village centre is dominated by woollen mills and Victorian buildings.
