Your Personal Town Guide
West Yorkshire
Huddersfield is best seen from the top of Castle Hill that stands 1,000ft over the town and has been occupied as a defensive structure since the stone age. The town itself developed as a centre for the wool textile industry in the 18th century – its wealth reflected in the grand Victorian buildings in the town centre - probably the best example being the railway station that opened in 1850. It’s a university town with many independent shops serving the students, as well as the popular outdoor market. It also makes an excellent base for discovering both the Colne and Holme valleys.
