Castleford
West Yorkshire
Castleford has a long history as at one time the Romans built a castle here to guard the ford over the river Aire. Today, the town centre dates from the turn of the 20th century when coal mining was its main industry. Coal was sent by barge on the Leeds-Goole Aire Calder Navigation to the power stations nearby and exported via the Humber ports. Today the coal industry is no more and the canal carries pleasure craft.
