Bingley
West Yorkshire
Bingley was transformed from a small market town with the arrival of the canal in the 1770s bringing cheap coal to fire the furnaces of mills. To get the canal to the town along the valley was a feat of engineering and required both a five rise and a three rise system of locks. The old town centre around the church (1120) and the bridge over the river Aire is untouched since the 1840s. There is still a market held around the old market cross – a tradition that has gone on since 1212. High above the town is the St Ives estate – home of the Ferrand family, although the ruined hall here dates back to medieval times - where you can walk the paths and trails to get wonderful views of the Aire Valley.
