Your Personal Town Guide
North Yorkshire
Whitby is without doubt the most scenic port along the East Coast of England. Its place in history is assured: at the Abbey on the headland in 664 the date for Easter was set; it was here that Captain James Cook served his apprenticeship; and also here Bram Stoker was inspired to set Dracula. It is still a fishing port, although tourism is now the major industry. The town is split in two by the river Esk and on the north side has a long sandy beach and, to the south, cliffs in which to find fossils or even the black jet that is washed-up and made into jewellery.
