Skipton
North Yorkshire
Skipton , Sheep Town, dubs itself The Gateway to the Dales, but it is much more than that – the High Street is like a boulevard and on market day stalls crowd the pavements on either side. At its head lies the Parish Church and, next door, the Castle – both in a commanding position overlooking the town. The Leeds-Liverpool canal basin is picturesque and home to an annual waterways festival. It is an excellent base to explore Bolton Abbey, Wharfedale or West Yorkshire.
