Robin Hood's Bay
North Yorkshire
The village that tumbles down a steep ravine to the sea was once located higher up the bay – hence Old St Stephen’s Church lies on its own on the road from Whitby down to the village. Set in a huge curving bay it became a thriving fishing port in the 17th century and a centre for smuggling! No commercial fishing takes place today. There are numerous shipwrecks in the bay as the reefs stretch out far into the sea and at low tide you can go rock pooling. Fossils can be found in the cliffs. Please note that you can only access the village and beach on foot from the car park at the top – it’s a very steep climb on the way back!!

Most people just head down the hill to the beach and return the same way - but there is a maze of alleys and viewpoints to discover. You'll also find a route back up the hill that is a lot less strenuous!
