Northallerton
North Yorkshire
Little of Northallerton’s early history can be seen – the earthworks of a castle lie to the north of the medieval parish church. It grew as a market centre and later as a staging post along the London to Edinburgh Great North Road. Hence having a very wide High Street. Here passengers would disembark to one of the Inns that line the road. The arrival of the railway in the 1840s saw an end to its coaching days. It is the county town for North Yorkshire and the impressive County Hall was built here in 1906. It is an upmarket town with many exclusive shops not found elsewhere – drawing wealthy farming families in on market days.
