Hull
East Yorkshire
Hull takes it name for the tiny river that snakes 21 miles from Driffield across the low lying East Yorshire to drain into the Humber estuary. It was here in 1293 that Edward I recognised its importance as a trading port and dubbed it “Kinges town upon Hull”. Over successive centuries its facilities expanded and at one time had the largest fishing fleet in the country. Fishing isn’t as important now and many of the former docks have been filled in. However the docks are still very busy with the import/export trade. Much of Hull’s history was swept away in bombing raids during WWII, but it still retains its independent spirit and culture quite unlike any other city in Yorkshire.
